![]() We all of course wanted to see Alberto get his-he spent the entire episode murdering likable characters. When they tell him to lower the gun, they fill him with lead. ![]() He holds his hands up, and can't do anything other than what the strike team tells him to do. Alberto, sitting on his couch and smoking something out of a pipe, is caught off guard at the strike team that enters his home. He is, and what follows is perhaps the episode's most harrowing moment. But Ian won't let him get himself in trouble, promising instead to use their authority as law enforcement to basically legally execute Alberto, as long as he's home alone. When he learns of what happened to Mitch from Ian ( Yellowstonestar and Mayor of Kingstown co-creator Hugh Dillon, once again playing a corrupt agent of law enforcement), Mike-who has spent time behind bars-wants to run in and kill Alberto himself (Alberto is sloppy his prints are everywhere and it doesn't take long to find him). Alberto thinks he can get away, and shoots Mitch in the back of the head. Alberto is unhinged Mitch tells him this money belongs to someone you don't want to be stealing from. ![]() And the plan basically goes without any sort of a snag-this is really routine busness-until a man named Alberto, who followed Milo's wife out of Mitch's office to her job at the strip club and then back to her home, surprises Mitch at his office and holds him at gunpoint. When the wife of the incarcerated Milo Sunter ( Game of Thrones' Aidan Gillen) comes to Mitch looking to retrieve some of Milo's stashed away money (we get more context on this in Episode 2), Mitch helps. He holds no official title, but he operates out of his office solving problems for people on all sides of Kingstown's robust system of incarceration (as Renner's opening narration makes clear, the town holds 7 prisons within a 10 mile radius 20,000 people behind bars). ![]() A little context: at first, Mitch is the titular "Mayor" of Kingstown. Mitch's death hits hard-not only to viewers, but to Jeremy Renner's Mike McLusky, Mitch's brother-because it just was so avoidable. If you want official confirmation, look as closely as the opening credits: in the first episode, the credit order goes "With Aidan Gillen, And Kyle Chandler," but by the second episode, the opening scroll just says "And Aidan Gillen." That's a series wrap on Mr. Mayor of Kingstown killed one of its biggest stars in the very first episode, as Kyle Chandler's character, Mitch McClusky, was executed in front of a safe in his office by a man named Alberto. Paramount Did Mitch McLusky (Kyle Chandler) really die in the first episode of Mayor of Kingstown? It's a stunning twist, one that follows similar suit to what Big Sky, a much more tame network drama, did in its first episode just about a year ago. And the episode's pivotal moment comes at the very end, when he "becomes" the Mayor of Kingstown, taking over the title from his brother and setting the events of the rest of the series in motion. While Chandler is a big star and could of course headline his own show, Renner is without question the star of this show. The surprise death comes as a shock, but as soon as the show began and you realize that Jeremy Renner's character is not the titular Mayor of Kingstown.you sort of had to assume that something along these lines would happen. But, clearly, we'll have to wait-he's currently filming a show called Super Pumped, which will air on Showtime. He did star as Colonel Cathcart in Hulu's 2019 adaptation of Catch-22, but that was a limited series Mayor of Kingstown seemed to mark Chandler's return to the TV space. To this day, the 56-year-old star is still best-known for his iconic (and Emmy-winning) role as Coach Eric Taylor in Friday Night Lights, and his Netflix series Bloodline concluded back in 2017. It's certainly a surprising twist for anyone who had been following the marketing and advertising campaign for Mayor of Kingstown the trailer prominently featured Mitch, and TV fans had to be eager for Chandler to return to their screens. But by the end of the show's first episode, though, we can count one major member of that cast out, as Mayor of Kingstown makes the shocking decision to kill Kyle Chandler's character, Mitch McLusky. It's got high production value, occasionally striking visuals, and a cast fit for a big screen epic. Mayor of Kingstown, Paramount+'s new Taylor Sheridan-helmed crime drama starring Jeremy Renner, is a TV series that, much like Sheridan's other big series Yellowstone, just feels cinematic. ![]() The following story contains spoilers for Mayor of Kingstown Episode 1, "The Mayor of Kingstown." ![]()
